T5 Extra High Output Marine LampsT5 Extra High Output Marine Lamps

The latest concept in lighting to hit the aquarium market. T5 actually only refers to the diameter of the tube - 5/8 of an inch (16mm). The tubes most of us are familiar with are 1" (25mm) diameter, referred to as T8.

The significant difference is the "high output" ability of the new T5 lamps. These tubes produce a light which is much more intense than their nearest T8 equivalent, and as a result is able to penetrate a greater depth of water

The Arcadia range consists of two T5 tubes, specifically for use with Marine Aquariums, corresponding to their existing T8 lamps - "Marine Blue" and "Marine White"

In the marine aquarium, some photosynthetic invertebrates are difficult to maintain under regular T8 tubes. Some cannot be kept at all, and others have to be placed high up the reef wall, close to the light source. Use of  T5 high output tubes, increase the number of species that can successfully kept, and increases the choice of where to place them in the tank, as well as increasing the maximum depth of reef aquarium that can be kept successfully.

Moonlight effect

The Arcadia Marine Blue Actinic lamp range has been created to provide the specific spectrum (400 - 480nm) necessary to achieve the blue chlorophyll absorption for zooxanthellae symbiosis to develop. This concentration of light energy in the so called 'actinic' range peaking at 420nm, is essential for the survival and good health of fish, corals and invertebrates in marine aquariums.

Another important element of the Arcadia Marine Blue Actinic lamp is the UV output present, which creates a very pleasant fluorescent effect on corals, invertebrates and exotic marine fish. When used at night with no other lamps, the effect is of a dark moonlit night with the vivid colours of the corals and invertebrates fluorescing brilliantly.

When used in conjunction with the Arcadia Marine White lamp range, the high levels of light output create a most realistic marine reef environment. This combination gives the most natural and pleasant appearance and highlights the fluorescence and bright colours of the fish, corals and invertebrates, along with the correct spectrum output at the required wavelengths to achieve the reproduction of the symbiotic algae, zooxanthellae.

All tubes are T5  16mm (5/8 inch) diameter

Superb light output

Powerful penetrating white light
Accentuates natural fish colours
Colour replicates reef environment

The Arcadia Marine White lamp has a colour temperature of 9,500K (Kelvin) and an exceptional lumen output combined with very good colour rendition. The tri-phosphor formulation provides consistent long life and stability of output at these high levels of performance.

These factors make it the ideal choice for the serious marine aquarist, with excellent levels of light throughout the aquarium and extraordinary clarity for viewing the constantly changing marine environment.

A high proportion of light energy is concentrated in the area between 400 and 480nm, which also assists in the promotion of zooxanthellae production to encourage coral and invertebrate growth.

The other peaks across the spectrum allow the true, vibrant and natural colours of the fish, corals and invertebrates to be enhanced and to really stand out.

To really achieve the best results for marine aquariums, we recommend the combination of Arcadia Marine White and Marine Blue Actinic lamps. This will provide the benefits of excellent light output levels coupled with the correct spectrum to support symbiotic algae, allowing good growth of the corals and invertebrates whilst greatly improving the overall lighting and appearance of the aquarium, with fluorescent effects as well.

Arcadia Electronic Controllers
The Arcadia Electronic Controller, is based on the same principal as the standard controller. i.e. a ballast, encased within a plastic body, from which come flexible lamp leads, and so allowing the ballast to be mounted outside the aquarium/vivarium, with the lamp leads feeding through the hood, and mounting onto a fluorescent tube.

This gives the versatility to use the controller to mount tubes over any aquarium, using any hood, regardless of dimensions - unlike rigid baton fittings

The standard controller contains a wire wound ballast, which creates an electro-magnmetic field sufficient to ignite the tube.

In the case of the electronic controller, the ballast is in the form of an electronic circuit board, which has a number of advantages over a traditional ballast:

1) There is no requirement for a starter switch or choke, as there is in the traditional form. These starters have a limited life-span, and do require replacing periodically.

2) They are much more energy efficient.
A traditional ballast wastes a considerable amount of the energy input into it, in the form of heat. This can be noticeably felt by placing a hand on a controller that has been running for a while.
In the case of the electronic controller, there is very little wastage loss through heat. Instead the majority of the energy that comes from the ballast is converted into light from the fluorescent tube.

3) There is no "flicker effect"
A fluorescent tube lit by a traditional ballast, is not actually producing a constant light output.
Instead, the light pulses at a rate that we cannot see, and so to the human eye the light is constant.
The eyes of some species are much more sensitive than humans, and can actually perceive this rapid pulsing of light.
Although this has not been shown to be harmful, it is a matter that has caused concern among many keepers of birds who fear that this strobe effect may be detrimental.
An electronic ballast however, results in a light output that is constant, even to the most sensitive species, and so can be used by bird keepers to alleviate any worries that they may have.

Important note: In the case of the new T5 High output lamps, it is essential that they are lit using an electronically ballasted unit. Traditional wire wound ballasts will fail very rapidly.

The Arcadia electronic controller is a smartly designed unit, which is manufactured using the latest sonic weld technology.
The result is a unit which is 100% waterproof, and so even in the unlikely event of the controller being accidentally submerged, it would not be damaged as a result

The Arcadia Electronic controller range covers T5 lamps in a range of different wattages. Twin lamp controllers are available for anybody wishing to light more than one tube, and come fitted with IP64 caps on the ends of the flexible lamp leads.

IP64 is a splash-proof cap, which protects the end of the tube from water droplets that may hit it due to splash from the water surface e.g. from a filter inlet, or a jumping fish.
